I’m sitting at the Lima airport waiting for a red eye to Miami. Thought I’d debrief on paragliding. I was honestly extremely nervous. I have a fear of heights so I wasn’t 100% positive I would do it, but I’m glad I did. The scariest part was running off the cliff. That now defines the point of no return for me. It was fly or fall. It was also a little scary when the wind stopped blowing temporarily.
Here’s the crazy thing. The orientation was like two minutes long! And my tandem pilot was like a foot shorter than me and didn’t speak English. He just said “run when I say run“. And they didn’t tell us how to land until we were like two minutes from landing! Now that’s building the plane in the air!
Lots of feelings in the air! High levels of fear. High levels of awe. Those two emotions are cousins! And some feelings of nausea. I threw up seven times!
I learned lots of lessons in the air, but here’s one of them. You need to think, but you can’t over think. Over analysis leads to paralysis! Sometimes you need to defy logic to defy gravity!
