Every church needs to ask the question: what is our niche? If you have a “kingdom mindset” then you don’t have to be all things to all people. You embrace the simple fact that we need lots of different kinds of churches because there are lots of different kinds of people. So what our niche as a church? I’m beginning to think that our niche may be “doing church in the middle of the marketplace.” I think there is a movement afoot that is akin to the multi-site movement which we’re apart of as well. I think churches are moving back into “marketplace” venues like theaters and coffeehouses and clubs. For what it’s worth, we’ve had several churches actually do reconaissance at NCC and decide to sell their church buildings and move into movie theaters! That is the inverse of traditional church planting. I think it’d be totally cool to promote a conference for “marketplace churches” to share ideas. I think we could coordinate that kind of conference. I think we need to get the coffeehouse under our belt first. But I think the church is called to compete in the marketplace of ideas. I’m believing that God is raising up a generation of “marketplace churches” or “tabernacle churches.” I think we can help lead the charge.
