No Shirt. No Shoes. No service :)

Had an interesting conversation about webcasting yesterday at our multi-site gathering.

We’re going to launch a theaterchurch.com webcast when we launch our coffeehouse services in January so I’m using a lot of hard drive space thinking about it.

I know the great danger is that people would opt for high tech via podcast or webcast and lose out on high touch. Hebrews says “don’t forsake the assembling together of yourselves.” So podcasting and webcasting are by no means an “alternative.” They are a “supplement.” I think they are for the person who is testing the waters but not quite ready to step foot into a church yet. That’s who we’re targeting. I also think they offer a double dose of your weekend message. I see them as spiritual supplements. And it’s an easy way to evite someone to NCC. Check out our webcast.

This may sound weird, but one of our goals is for people to be able to attend NCC in their underwear :) Let me explain. Remember those old commercials that picture people working on their home computer in their sciveys? We often talk about our website being our fitting room. I want people to be able to check out NCC in the privacy and security of their own home! Of course, we request that they get dressed before actually coming :)

The team from Christ Fellowship in West Palm Beach said that about 1,000 people watch their live webcast each weekend. One of them said, “Maybe our website is one of our sites.” I was thinking the exact same thing when he said it! They are considering a virtual pastor to lead that virtual location.

For what it’s worth, I love the webcast that LifeChurch.tv does too. They rock! I think they are setting the standard.

Yesterday I alluded to the fact that maybe iPods should be considered virtual locations. Now with the video iPod release yesterday, everyone can have their own video venue :) By the way, we will sell the video iPod on GodiPod.com. We just need a little time to add it to our menu of iPod options.

I now this ruffles some featers, but we always need to be rethinking the way we do church. I think that is part of incarnation. We’re always morphing. If you’re doing church the same way you did church a decade ago it might be time for a tune up. Plus that’s just downright boring :)

I never want to fall into the trap of doing ministry out of memory! In other words, you just do what you did yesterday. I want to do ministry out of imagination. I think there are ways of doing discipleship that no one has thought of yet. And I think technology has alot to do with that. Digital discipleship.
