Mental Metabolism

I’ve been trying to do a better job managing my metabolism lately. As you get older, or if you exercise less, your metabolism generally slows down. So I’ve made a few tweaks this year. I’ve added breakfast to my morning routine. And I work out slower. Whether it’s curls or bench press, I heard that slowing down the motion actually increased metabolism longer. So I’m making a few tweaks.

Anywho.

I really felt like my mental metabolism slowed down last year. Too much writing and speaking. Not enough reading. So here’s how I generally begin my day. I start off with my one-year Bible. I feel like it helps me keep a healthy spiritual metabolism. The Bible has caloric value. And when I digest Scripture it translates into spiritual energy. Then I try to read a chapter or two from a book. I’m always working on several books at the same time. But I’ve found that it helps me be more thoughtful.

By the way, I’m also trying to read one parenting book a month. I feel like that helps me stay proactive as a parent which is half the battle! It keeps me thinking about parenting. And, honestly, good parenting doesn’t happen by default. You’ve got to work hard and think hard and pray hard.
