Several years ago I stopped setting what I would call getting goals and started setting giving goals. It really helped transform my motives. It’s not about how much I can make. It’s about how much I can give. Then I became a trustee for a charitable foundation and it gave me a new perspective on leveraging what we have to bless others. The person who created the foundation that I serve as a trustee is still blessing people long after his death. His legacy continues. And then this weekend I met Stanley Tam who made God his Senior Partner in 1955 and has given away more than $100 million.
Here’s an observation. Stanley didn’t wait till he had lots of money. He made the decision early on when his company was barely making ends meet. What if we followed suit?
Lora and I have always dreamed of starting a family foundation. Honestly, I have no idea what to set up or how to set it up. I’d welcome any ideas or advice. But I’m motivated to create something sooner than later. Sometimes we let what we don’t have or don’t know keep us from taking that first step of faith. Or to use Stanley Tam’s words: “We don’t think we have enough money to cross the Jordan River.”
I’m not sure what financial step of faith you need to make. Maybe it’s tithing. Maybe it’s a faith promise. Maybe it’s making God your Senior Partner. I want to challenge you to make the pledge or write the check or give the stock. And do it during this recession! You cannot out give God. His shovel if bigger than yours!
Live to Give!
