The Power of If

if.

It’s such a small word, but it’s so powerful. It’s a consequential word: if this, then that. It’s a conjunctive word: it has the power to turn promises into reality.  It’s a conditional word: alternate realities are the result of “if you do” or “if you don’t“.

The little two-letter “if” is one of the most important words in the Bible.  There are hundreds of conditional promises that have an “if” in them. If we do what we need to do then God will do what God does! But there is always a little “if” in between the promise and the promise land. Sometimes it’s a long “if.” Sometimes it’s a hard “if.” But one thing I find with every conditional promise in Scripture: the if is always followed by action.  There needs to be a verb to complete the possibility, complete the promise, complete the sentence.  If you confess…If you humble yourself and pray…if you believe…

The word “if” is a word of regret: “if only.” It’s also a word of possibility: “if then” and “if when.” It’s a word of determination: “no ifs, ands, or buts.”
