Hammock of Grace

I talked about the Day of Atonement this week. It was the greatest day of the year for the Jewish people. No day was more anticipated as their sins were covered. It was considered a Sabbath of Sabbaths. And I love this little delineation: “a Sabbath of rest.” Obviously, rest is at the heart of sabbath. But it’s much more profound that a little R & R or catching up on sleep. It’s a spiritual rest. Here’s the difference between religion and Christianity. Religion is all about what you can do for God. It’s completely exhausting! Christianity is all about what God has done for you. We can completely relax in the grace of God. I like to think of it as the hammock of God’s grace.

I love hammocks. I love them even more on a beautiful day. A little bit of sunshine. A little bit of breeze. And a little bit of shade from a tree. Throw in the sound of waves. And add a little swing to the hammock. That is the grace of God. You can completely rest in His sovereign and sufficient grace.
