Ethiopia: Wildlife

I saw more wildlife in one day today that I’ve seen the rest of my life combined. It was absolutely incredible to be a few feet from gazelles and baboons and camels. We even saw a couple of warthogs. The baboons were all around our campgrounds. In fact, one of our team members got pooped on by a Baboon. I wonder if it was aiming? It was a little scary at first, but the baboons were more afraid of us than we were of them. By the way, why did God create them with bare butts? Deep thoughts by Mark Batterson.

We did a game drive this afternoon. The highlight for me was sitting on the roof of the land cruiser, the African sun beating down on me, the breeze in my face, the sound of birds filling the air, scanning the horizon for animals, and surrounded by clouds casting shadows on the mountains. It was sensory overload. We stopped at one point at a gorge that overlooks the Awash river. We were probably a few hundred feet above the river looking over a cliff. What a sight. I felt like God enjoyed our joy. It was like he was saying, “Look at what I made.” It was amazing to see another corner of the world like this. I think today is what heaven will be like. I think we’ll never stop discovering new things about God–His creativity and mystery and beauty. Every day in heaven will be like today! There is nothing like experiencing something like this for the first time! I think that is part of what Revelation 21:5 means: “I am making all things new!”

We ended the day around the campfire praying and singing. It’s hard not to worship after a day like today. It was a day unlike any other.
