I was so impacted by the culture of honor at Healing Place Church last week. I can’t get it out of my mind. It was like southern hospitality on steroids. I also feel like that is what makes the Association of Related Churches so unique.
I feel like my most difficult and most important role as Lead Pastor is that of culture curator. And I feel like I want honor to be more central to our culture. We’re awfully good at creativity–we have a culture of experimentation. We’re awfully good at laughter–we have a culture of fun. I think we’re getting better at honor.
The other reason I’m so focused on honor right now is that I want to honor Pastor Michael Hall and the People’s Church. They have blessed us by entrusting their church to us on Barracks Row and I want to steward that building and honor them for their faith in us. I asked Pastor Hall to share with our leaders last weekend and I kept thinking of I Timothy 5:17. It says that elders who lead well are worthy of double honor. I want NCC to have a culture of double honor! I want us to double honor our staff for going the extra mile. I want us to double honor our leaders for doing what they do without getting paid to do it. I want us to double honor the Word of God. And above all else, I want us to double honor the Son of God.
