Summer and I got up early for our Alcatraz swim this morning. We checked in, paraded from Pier 41 to Pier 33, then took the ferry out to Alcatraz. The fog was so thick that we couldn’t see Alcatraz until we were just off shore. We actually thought that swimming in fog would make for a fun challenge! The event organizers thought differently.
I can’t even put into words the level of shock and disappointment when they announced that it was canceled. We’ve been training for months! I guess there is a small window when the tides are just right and we missed the window. The let down amongst the swimmers was one of the most visceral things I’ve ever experienced, but I think we all understood the inherent danger so no one complained. Gonna take a while to get over this, but I’m so proud of Summer for just getting on that boat. Took a ton of courage! And she was definitely one of the youngest swimmers aboard.
Despite the disappointment, we’re having a wonderful time as father and daughter. Lots of memories we’ll never forget: mini donuts on Pier 39, riding the cable cars, and touring Alcatraz. Tonight we’ll have dinner at The Cliff House. Not gonna let the disappointment rob the joy of experiencing San Fran with my little girl.
