A Thouand Hills

One of my earliest childhood memories is driving from Minneapolis to Redwing, MN to pick apples. I was probably five years-old. Not sure what prompted it, but my grandfather sang He Owns the Cattle. It’s on old hymn inspired by Psalm 50:10.

He owns the cattle on a thousand hills
The wealth in every mine,
He owns the rivers and the rocks and rills,
The sun and stars that shine,
Wonderful riches more than tongue can tell
He is my Father so they’re mine as well
He owns the cattle on a thousand hills
I know that He will care for me.

Had a powerful moment during devotions today. This song is just what I needed and I feel like the Holy Spirit surfaced it after more than three decades of dormancy! I can’t help but wonder if God inspired my grandfather to sing that song THEN so that it would inspire faith in me RIGHT NOW. I’m standing on Psalm 50:10 today! God doesn’t just own the cattle on a thousand hills. He owns the thousand hills. It all belongs to him. In the words of Abraham Kuyper: “There is not a square inch of the entire creation about which Jesus Christ does not yell, ‘This mine. This belongs to me‘.”
