St. Gregory said, “All holy desires grow by delay; and if they diminish by the delay, then they were never holy desires.” My spirit bears witness with that. If the desire goes away then it wasn’t a holy desire given by God.
For thirteen years I dreamed of writing a book, but I could never seem to finish a manuscript. I was certainly frustrated during more than a decade of delays, but the desire never went away. It only intensified. I think that is the litmus test. No matter how many times a holy desire dies, it will always be resurrected in a more intensified form.
I hate delays, but that is the way God grows us so we’re ready for the fulfillment of the dream or desire He has put in our heart. I wasn’t ready to write when I was twenty-two. I had to accumulate some life experience before I was ready.
