I’m still in shock.
Honestly, I’ve rarely experienced anything as humbling as what happened in Dallas, Texas on Thursday night. I was speaking at the Sound Worship Conference at Covenant Church. I met Founding Pastor, Mike Hayes, about fifteen minutes before the service started. He had read The Circle Maker, but we’d never actually met. He briefly told me that they have identified 12 Gateway Cities that they are praying for and one of them is DC. He briefly mentioned the possibility of partnering with us, but I had no idea how much he meant it.
So after preaching, Mike got up and said that they didn’t need to plant in DC because they found a partner–National Community Church. Then he said they wanted to raise $100,000 on the spot. Are you kidding me? He and Kathy pledged the first $5000 and four other people stepped up and made a $5000 pledge immediately! Then 50 people raised their hands and pledged $1000. And another 50 raised their hands to pledge $500. They literally raised $100,000 in five minutes flat. I’ve never seen anything like it.
A few reflections.
If Pastor Mike hadn’t asked for pledges on the spot, I’m guessing they wouldn’t have raised $100,000. When the Holy Spirit quickens you, act quickly! Don’t wait. Courageously ask people to make a commitment. It will involve a risk, but it’s less risky than not taking a risk.
Being on the receiving end of something like this makes me want to be on the giving end next time. I can’t wait to return the favor, and by that, I mean the favor of God.
Finally, I’m not shocked by the way God has blessed Covenant. If you’re generous toward others, God has a way of meeting your every need.
What I love about this gift is that we weren’t asking for anything! That’s what blows me away. But God knows what we need. He knows the vision we have for a Dream Center because he gave it to us! And when God gives a vision, He always makes a provision! It’s no coincidence that we got this gift the day after we got the Q Street Building! What a confirmation!
